Varenna is a charming village on the shores of the Lecco branch of Lake Como, known for its pastel-colored houses cascading down to the water. It is one of the most picturesque destinations on the lake and offers some of the most beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
Located in the central part of the lake, Varenna is easily reached from Bellagio, Tremezzo, and Menaggio by ferry or private boat. The village is formed by a network of narrow streets that descend steeply toward the lake, creating a unique and intimate atmosphere. The lakeside promenade, known as Via dell’Amore, is particularly scenic and ideal for a relaxing walk.

Just outside the village center stands Villa Monastero, originally a spiritual retreat for Cistercian nuns. Today, the villa and its gardens are open to the public. Admission is 15 Euros.
The highlight of the visit is the long lakeside garden, which stretches along the water and offers a continuous sequence of botanical varieties and breathtaking views of the lake.

Rising about 200 meters above the center of Varenna, Castello di Vezio is the remaining tower of a medieval castle, once home to the Lombard Queen Teodolinda. The castle is open to visitors and offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views over Lake Como.
The site also hosts a falconry center dedicated to the care and training of birds of prey. For visitors without a car, the castle can be reached on foot in about an hour via scenic uphill paths.
